I spoke with the homicide detective yesterday and they feel certain that there was no foul play, but they still have no idea who he is or how he got there. It would be helpful if those flying Kagel will search the hillsides for a possible vehicle over the side. Just in case.

This is good. We don't need the "foul play" issue floating around Kagel, even tentatively.

I'll keep my eyes peeled (what a weird expression!) for a vehicle if I'm up that way.

I think making fun of this situation is in very poor taste and quite offensive... the person died what was probably a terrible death, no one knows who he is, his family may be looking for him, he maybe someone's father, and he died all alone...

If his family is looking for him and found this thread how do you think they would feel? And how do you think it makes the pilot community look?

A week and a half and I still can't find any mention of it beyond the very basic description in the above link. I'm intrigued by the simple mystery of it. I've spent many hours up there alone over the years just contemplating life and I feel the need to know who he was, how he died, and why. I would expect such a thing would garner more coverage and I wish it did. I can only imagine it is a sad truth, but it needs told. A man's death in our community under such circumstances should be at least as newsworthy as the latest celebrity DUI. Perhaps nothing is known, which is very sad.

Listening to the late night news last night (1/12) this story came up again with a sketch of the man, but no identification. At the end of the story there was a statement that the cause of death was ruled a homicide with no further details. This would explain the reason that this was treated as a crime scene.

Of course, network news may or may not be accurate so this can only be put in the category of better than rumor but not verified fact.

I've spoken again with the homicide detective and he's forwarded me a composite sketch of the victim and is asking our help distributing it in the community.
Ken Andrews will be making it available on the website very soon. We'll also have copies of it out at Kagel.

I've just spoken again with the detective and he's confident that the deceased was not a victim of foul play. They just want to find out who he is so they can notify his family.

Well, we all know better than that. We've been fighting the gate-nappers for a while. (And there are other ways up there, they are just much less convenient. Motorcycles, ATVs, the other road, hiking, aircraft, etc.)

On the other hand, comboholders would clearly be higher on the suspect list than random others.

On the third hand, the police claim foul play was unlikely to be involved, so it sounds like they aren't worried about us either way.

Will the mystery man be identified? Is one of the Sylmartians a suspect in foul play? Will Rome be flying at 90? Will Joe Greblo go an entire day without talking? Will George grow some hair?

Sheriff Detective's suggested that in the future, they may helicopter in a search party to do a grid search on the area around where they found the body. They would like to find the shoes and shirt of the victim and anything else they can find.

If you see the helicopter coming in, you'll want to move you glider to the east end of the set up area to avoid rotor wash. I'll try to get them to give us a heads up beforehand.

Just in from the Sheriff Detective. They have identified the victim as a person missing from the Torrance area. No further investigations are planned.
