Glad somebody here enjoyed it. I guess I better spend more time at Elsinore or Andy Jackson, then. Saturday's melee was a fluke. Usually, Gridley Street is pretty boring.

I got to watch E-Team Jack's whack on Sunday from 1,000' over Mike's LZ but decided to take a break from the Sven Nykvist bit for that flight.

Love your videos. They're getting better, with smooth transitions etc. Allows me to live vicariously through you guys when I can't get out there.

Yesterday was a blast out at Elsinore and a record number of HG s landed in Everyday Mike's funky little LZ. Here's Kenny's video of that

Hmmmmmm............were you the last person that landed in the video that was doing the S-turns? If you were, was there any reason that you didn't go upright sooner when you knew you were high? Wouldn't that of helped you create more drag and help increase your descent rate?

That was me landing last and doing the S-Turns. I was flying with a single suspension backplate harness (Rotor Kickass) that restricts my ability to turn my head when I sit upright because it interferes with my helmet. Setting up my approach, I had to go back to semi-prone, with the slider forward so I could see adequately. I also get better control in turbulence semi-prone than upright in that harness.

I came over the LZ with 1,500' to spare and used that altitude to practice my approach. I also spent 15 minutes during the 2 1/2 flight flying fully upright with my legs dangling. Getting back to my landing: the wind had picked up since the last person landed before me and was blowing downhill at about 15 MPH. At that point it was better for me to use S-turns to control my approach. My airspeed was higher than it looked and you can hear my wires whistling on final when I burned it in.

Several of us walked that LZ in late November and walked away mumbling - "...not if I can help it". Looked scary as hell.

We didn't even look at it again this past Sunday - but, hearing that numerous people are landing there without much carnage makes me want to reevaluate it.

I looked at your track log but find it basically useless for two reasons - The time intervals are too far apart and it doesn't "line up" well with the Google Earth picture.

I'm curious what approach most people take to land there - a left hand aircraft? Going downwind on the South side of the Oak tree, then a left turn onto base, then another left onto final?

We "took our chances" and landed along Grand Ave in the long field just North of Ortega Hwy. That 1,000' runway was just too inviting to pass up. The only drawback was the required glide to get there against the ~10mph headwind. I didn't have much problem in a Litesport but Freddy in a Falcon was pretty much "On Final" from launch.

You described the approach perfectly. Everyday Mike's LZ had the advantages on Sunday of being downwind of launch and being oriented uphill into the wind. While quite sheltered, it was working very well.

I've been shooting all my stills and videos on a Canon SD870 IS Digital Elf. It has 28mm effective with 3X optical zoom and records at an extremely high bit rate in 640x480. When compressed down to 4000 kbps it still yields an excellent full screen video. You can edit the data file with any software unlike the new hi def formats that require special software. I did recently buy a Panasonic DMC 28 on sale on Amazon that uses a more compressed video format and has hi def but I was too tired to run over to my car and grab it to shoot the beach scenes at Santa Barbara on Saturday. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNJLcTmHbLc It has a 27mm effective wide angle with 13X optical zoom and a much better lens than the Canon, but it's also like 5X bulkier, and I like the pocket size Canons a bunch. Plus the menus are awful on the Panasonic. The Canon is very intuitive.
