Sylmar Hang Gliding Association

In High Times there is a chart of historical marks about Sylmar hang gliding. Some help is invited to fill in the chart concerning the Seagull III flight and interview for TV 60 Minute News that helpd to put hang gliding and Sylmar hang gliding on national TV. I am missing the date of the flight and airing. Mike Riggs, owner of Seagull, provided the glider that I flew from the 1500' west of today's LZ. Mike duct taped a camera to the crossbar. The program 60 Minutes was in its rise. Uneventful flight; OK landing; I still can feel part of the flight in my bones and skin ...after about 37 years. The interview and flight was aired on _____________.

My guess is that CBS has archive copy of the interview and flight images.

Joe Greblo is insisting that I be fully retrenched at Dockweiler before he signs me off for Kagel. Wise. I had too many incidents in my decade of flights. Similar challenging incidents showed in my car driving, kiting, skiing, body surfing, SCUBA, and just living. There seems to be an edge in me that results in "minor" accidents; such must be respected as I return to hang gliding.

It has been a pleasure watching and listening to SHGA members during this past year. I miss the presence of the variety of types of hang gliders, but admire the fine tuning that continues for the near-Weiss flying wing (1909); and the 1908 hang glider cable-stayed triangle control frame and its single-point pendulumed pilot (used in the Breslau territory gliding club on a ribbed-sailed hang glider) is still with us iconically after 100 years!

Perhaps someone has the date for the Sylmar-promoting clip in 60 Minutes News. Then an update might be made on the Sylmar Hang Gliding History chart. Thanks.

I don't recall ever seeing the 60 Minutes piece on tv. I'd love to see it, so I'll join you in putting out a call to pilots to see if they can find it somewhere.

The title of the 60 Minutes episode shot in Sylmar is “Ever Since Icarus�
and it aired on August 31, 1975.
A copy is in a film/video library ...apparently pay-per-hour of visiting/viewing archives in an CBS film library in Manhattan. New York. No known Internet access.

The holder tells me:
The material may be screened here in Manhattan. An appointment must be scheduled and the fee is $25 per hour.

We do not have still photos, this is a film/tape library only.

Yes, that’s the main address, between 10th and 11th Avenues, however, the screening would take place at 533 West 57th Street (across the street from the Broadcast Center). You would have to make an appointment in advance to screen. We have production clients here all the time and we have to make sure that a machine is available. We also have to have the material pulled. The office hours are 10 am to 5 pm.

Some headway:
CBS has given firm copyright guidelines to me on a still photograph from the day in 1975 when Mike Wallace interviewed me and took video of the flight for their episode. Further use of the photograph beyond use in Hang Gliding Timeline must receive further permissions. The photograph may be viewed online by clicking from link from the timeline:

We might be able to file a freedom of information act request. If we have any Native American(Dna) in a club member and he flys Soboba, maybe we could force its release through treaty obligations on Sacred Artifacts.

CBS might want to release at least a downgraded copy rather than face PR nightmare.
