Like most of you I love to follow Joseph's rants, the gopher hunt and all other juicy tidbits, but yet my gen-x need for instant gratification is sadly being ignored.
My poor self is forced to gaze upon the stalest, moldiest, relic and then have to scroll down to change the default to "OLDEST FIRST" ?

Nobody has ever said anyhing about the sort order, so this is coming out of left field for me. I'll need to see if there is a mod for the forum to allow users to specify their own settings that will read the cookie first to determine the preference.
Don't hold your breath for a quick fix. But I will likely find it and if I do I'll implement it, just for you
This might be a good idea. If you are too far behind, it could be annoying, but for those who keep up, like Drachenflieger, it would probably make things a lot easier.
But Chip's got lots on his plate.
BTW, I want to publicly thank him for all this work. If you see him (or feel like doing it online) it might be a good thing to thank him also.
For what it's worth, the paraglidingforum http://www.paraglidingforum.com has probably the coolest setup I've seen. The default is the standard 'read down the list from first to last'. But there is also a small 'unread' flag on each topic indicating how many messages you have not read on that topic. If you click the flag, it takes you to your first unread message in the list (and you can keep reading down).
Of course they have an entire support team and a world-wide audience.
They also have an actual SQL database and a newer version of phpBB (our bulletin board software).
There are many more things we could do with the version 4. But it's the conversion of the access DB and all of the processes that have been wrapped around the current DB that make changing or updating the software difficult.
I'm still looking into the mod. I found several but normally it is for all users and does not allow the user to specify the preference. I'll also look at the read flag idea, that may be the ticket to nearly achieving the idea Mike had.
All in all, the ideas have merit, I'm just trying to make the changes only apply to the users that want them.

Thanks Chip for actually not taking this too seriously and just going with it, not to mention doing a fantastic job with this here wacko forum.
I guess I need to be more careful with what I post, considering some delicate feelings out there...ha!
