The red handle at my right hip is the ripcord for my BRS parachute deployment rocket, no longer in fashion for hang gliders. Why? One, they won't let you take it aboard a commercial airplane. Two, they have to be replaced every 5 years or so. Three, sometimes they go off when you don't want them to, shooting flames and wreaking destruction and disaster. (Maybe that's the reason for "One.") There is a safety that is supposed to prevent that from happening. They are still used on Moyes Tugs and many light general aircraft.
"Hollywood" Mike Champlin, a pilot who learned at Sylmar, and who was on the verge of beating Larry Tudor's long distance record in the mid '90's, was killed when trying spins in a Millennium rigid wing because he lost control and the BRS rocket did not deploy the chute. Apparently there was a preflight inspection error - - the safety that keeps the rocket from firing was not released before Mike's last flight.
