New dog rule

So it's been over a year since the dog rule been applied and only some dog owners stick to the club rule but most of them ignoring it, last Saturday there were a few dogs running around in the lz setting up landmines one of the new pilot step into it and dragged it into the gazebo where some of the pilots still eating their meals I'm telling you it's not a pleasant smell when you're eating your meals or you carrying your glider to the breakdown area and you have to watch your steps, to me that's not acceptable, like Larry said this is a fly park not a dog park. The biggest offenders are club members what been with the club for many years and donated many hours of volunteer work, so my conclusion is the those club rules don't apply to those members and many pilots are afraid to say something because of their status if that is true so let me know and I will shut up but don't expect me to follow the club rules either. So I'm up for a new dog rule since the old dog rules cannot be enforced no dogs at all or if the club wants to designate an area for dogs away from the Green grass and gazebo that's fine with me, it could be to area right next to the porto potty so if it stinks you wouldn't know where it came from. Let's vote on it.

Don't penalize the people that keep their dog on a leash though.
(just my 2 cents worth, even though I don't have a dog, I know of at least one dog that's always on a leash. now it just doesn't seem fair that they should have to suffer because of other unleashed dogs.)

I am pleased that we can now bring our canine pals to the LZ and I have no problem with the rules about dog / owner behavior. I'd like to keep the dog rule as it is.

We members forged the rules and it's up to each of us to remind folks to be respectful of our rules so they may continue to have the privilege of bringing dogs to the LZ. Each and every member is empowered to politely remind ANYONE on SHGA property about proper canine management. If you see continued infractions after you've done your duty, please give specifics to the Board for evaluation.

Katherine has it right: If you see a goat taking a dump, point it out to the owner. If you don't know the owner, ask around and politely point out that their goat has made a mess. I have made a point of telling owners to clean up the goat-goo as soon as I see it happen or come across it. When I hear, "but it wasn't my goat!", I tell them it doesn't matter; next time someone else with a goat may have to clean up after them (see "lastly," below).

Owners - "Goats should be on a leash at all times." Well, we know that isn't being strictly followed. So owners: have the sense to at least use a leash when non-members are around and control your goat when non-member, goat-walking neighbors are passing through. Also, when children are present (good sense, no?). At least, if your goat bites a member, s/he may be more likely to file suit against you and not the property owner (all of us). Of course, the leash rule always applies and someone is going to police it from time to time. Thank them for reminding you, get the goat-collar out and grumble about it privately. Lance gets a bye on this one, as far as I'm concerned.

Lastly, did you all know that your favorite grounds keeper is cleaning up after everyone else's goat? If you other goat owners continue your discourtesy to your fellow non-goat-herding pilots, the rule will change and you could be watering the dirt, wishing you hadn't reduced Rob's incentive to be there so often.

Apologies to Kathy Moacanin who religiously follows the rule.

Personally I love dogs and am happy when they are around. but it is not at all fair to our other members, children, visiting neighbors, etc to not have full control of our animals including their clean up.

If someone can locally ask the County Parks department or Public Works about getting those dispensers for pet clean-up bags it may be a great item to have available to assist folks in picking up after their pets. I believe for a local park that they may be provided free of charge.

I will ask our warehouse staff if we carry them for the Orange County Parks. If so, I may be able to get a start-up dispenser and bags... If they need to know which park it is for I will probably not be able to get them so if anyone works for or is familiar with their County Parks department please check it out.

I admit it. I'm a dog lover. I've got three little dogs that my wife likes to bring with her when she comes out to the flight park. They keep her company while I go flying. She always keeps them on leash and always brings her own bags in case of doggie doo doo. Picking up after your dog is not a hard one to figure out.

I personally cast a vote to allow dogs on the periphery of the park, always on a leash. No frolicking, happy go lucky pooches walking sans leash in the LZ.

On a leash or out in the upper LZ. Nothing else will work. C'mon, you can live with it. If you want them to run, take them down to the wash and stay with them.

The dogs are not the problem its the dog owners . that,s like trying to blame the gun for gun violence.If you see defecation occurring say something to the dogs owner let them know it's pooper scoopin time.

True the ballot doesn't give a final answer but it opens the topic for discussion again and maybe some helpful ideas will come from it.

I was able to get over 1000 pet clean-up bags in rolls of 250 bags but without a dispenser. I am sure we could come up with a simple way to mount them for easy access.

If we want to really give some direction to the Board on this topic then the ballot would certainly need to be more specific.

For me, I would like to vote for "dogs permitted only on leash and controlled by owner. Dog poop or other mess requires clean-up by owner. Infractions of this rule will be cause for future refusal of priveleges to owner."

Unfortunately allowing dogs off of their leash puts members and visitor at risk which also puts the club at risk.

Off to Hawaii on vacation tomorrow, no flying for me for a couple more weeks so I won't be able to bring the doggie bags to Sylmar for a bit.

If would be up to me I would say no dogs on the green grass and the gazebo anywhere else in the flight Park the dog should be on the leash, so pilots and visitors don't have to worry about stepping into a landmine. Even though many dog owners have good attentions to clean up after their K9 but that doesn't happen always for what ever reason.
So please don't make your dog be a nuisance to other club members and visitors please please please please please thank you.

I agree with Jaromir Wagner, that dogs should be kept on a leash and out of the main grassy area. I'm OK with folks keeping their dogs on the periphery of the park, in the shade of surrounding trees, etc. but always on a leash.

just want to say that i love everybody! but COLA is my favorite of all y'all! it would be less of an l/z if we didn't get to see her enthusiastic boundings-around! she reminds all of us old folks needing advil to move our gliders around that we, too, were once young pups. I HAVE TO AGREE WITH KATHERINE AND JIM on this one. if we notice dogs being dogs, tell the owner. i can think of two owners and even a non-owner, but friend of an owner, who i've seen cleaning up other dogs' landmines--cuz that's just how they roll. and it DOES make sense to me that the if you are in the l/z daily, cleaning, watering, repairing, caretaking and you have a dog and are scrupulously conscientious about cleaning up any little landmines or gopher remains your dog may have deposited, then you, frankly, should be able to do whatever you want! cost benefit analysis kind of thing...

but again, i love everyone. especially if they can get to west towers and big t and BACK in a falcon, AND they know how to land!

perhaps there's an alternative solution: we could just fence off a comfortable area for those pilots and friends who don't need or desire to closely experience the refreshing romps and doggy antics of our canine pals. maybe a 20' x 50' parcel at the southwest corner of the grass. easy access to parking without stepping in anything. we may have to rename ourselves the SD&HGA.

Make it to West Towers AND land well too? I guess that lets me out. Speaking of land(mines). I noticed a very bad landmine problem last weekend. But, it turned out to be Hayden with a fake pile of pooch poo.
