I just received the following message from Davis and thought it was worth posting around the clubs where I fly:
....I would like to invite Southern California pilots to come out to the Santa Cruz Flats Race in Casa Grande, Arizona, September 20-26th. This is a USHPA and CIVL sanctioned race to goal format competition. It is a great competition and we've had a wonderful time there the past two years staying at the hotel, sitting by the pool, getting pulled up next to the golf course, and flying in smooth air conditions over the Arizona flatlands.
If you would be so kind as you keep this in mind and encourage any local pilots that you know who would enjoy coming to this competition.

This looks like fun and I'd like to fly in it. First I need to get my AT rating and practice with my T2. If anyone has any suggestions, please pass then my way.
Really wanted to go (already have room reservations) but money is kind of an issue. Dustin's comp clinic was in the same area and the LZs were everywhere. Should be a fun time.
As for getting your rating - probably pretty hard to accomplish in the next 5 weeks.
I believe there is some AT activity in the Pheonix area in the Fall/Winter/Spring but having someone that has the sign-off authority might be a problem.
Talk to Hungary Joe about it. I got my tow rating from him on one of his aerotow clinics. I don't know how many other people would have to show up to make it profitable for Joe but maybe it can be done within the next few weeks, assuming Joe is willing and his Dragonfly is flyable.
I suppose there is a small chance you could convince Dustin to have one tug there early in order to get trained. You'd have to have the right instructor too. It is probably worth a phone call anyway.
The more folks you have that want this, the more likely they are to do it, of course. Just like with Hungary Joe.
