Because the name "Falcon" has more cachet, and is sexier, than "Pelican".
Or "Buzzard". Or "Albatross". For example. And I really like Pelicans. And Buzzards.
When you think about it, the Albatross is really the bird you want to emulate.
He is the perfect soaring organism. And a tradition omen of good luck.

Falcon
It is called a Falcon because when you pull in - you drop out of the sky just like the bird in the video! 
Remember - there are only two speeds on a Falcon - Slow and Down.
Maybe that should be changed to:

Why Don, you 'ol caustic so and so! You know you loved your Falcon WAY more than your Litespeed! Everyone knows that Falcons are the "in" glider to own. That's why everyone wants to get into the Falcon League. But notice, it's invitation only. No, I've not been invited. Still working on my "backwards flying" skills. But i will be there one day. MARK MY WORDS!

Very easy - all you need is wind above trim.
I experienced it with ~30 mph wind 1,500' AGL at Wallaby in Florida. I use to have the track log to prove it but lost it in one of those computer crashes. Since it wasn't anything really unusual - no big deal.
You could probably do the same thing at Ave S but watch out for "trouble" behind you!

Dockweilers also good for backwards flying practice ,I practiced Hovering backwards toplandings and making circles backwards( well at least half the circle
,Its very challenging and lots of fun if you have the wind, for me 18 to 20 mph was great.Falcons Rule!
