From the Kagel Kam 10/27/09 - DWP has reduced our club's water rates by nearly 2/3 and eliminated the whole 2nd tier billing category. In addition they've made it retroactive for some months, turning our September's $565. water bill into a $2700. credit. Our "watering blues" are a thing of the past. I'm pretty sure this means Rob and I will be able to put in a 125' X 20' strip of grass leading up to the Hang 4 target. No more landing in the dirt for the Hang 4's. This means I won't have to listen to Rome reminisce about landing on wood chips.

That is great news. I think they had us zoned incorrectly and it might be a big battle to get them to change it. It was far easier to provide them with gifts of beaver fur products in exchange for reconsideration. The only risk is they may realize we have substituted gopher fur.
A ruff estimate of savings or revenue to the club is equal to $4500/year or 70 new members.

No actually we have always been paying the appropriate rate for our use of the land. There are generally only 2 rates; Residential and Commercial. Agriculture, businesses, clubs, private recreational facilities, etc., pay Commercial Rates and residents pay Residential rates. They’re not that different from each other as to the cost. Residential rates are a little bit lower. In Los Angeles, farmers don’t get their water cheap, nor do golf courses, private parks, etc.
We’re more than fortunate to get this new rate, so I hope everyone appreciates the money we’re going to save.
I did a study of our current and past rates and found that if we completed this years months of Aug-Dec, using the same water volume as last winter, and using the normal Commercial rates, our total annual water bill would have reached $6900.00.
Given the new rate structure, we will have payed only $2258.; or less than 1/3 of our old rates. It's probably safe to say this new rate will save us over $5,000 this year alone. This savings will pay for the Gazebo in 10 years.
Our percentage of savings of course varies depending on how much tier 2 water usage we have in any given month. On our highest month this year (July at $1405.) our new rate is $358. or 25% of our old rate. On our lowest usage month (Feb) our rate went from $71. down to 32. or nearly 40% of our old rate.
Given the reduction in the area of our lawn, I expect our water bill to be even lower than $2258 next year.
You guys are witnessing yet another reason why it’s incredibly important that the hang gliding park be seen by the public and the politicians as a “gem� in the community.
