I have been looking to get a radio and the VX-150 has been recomended to me buy many pilots. However it is currently out of production but used ones can be found as well as some new. The replacement radio from Yesau is the FT-250R and from reviews I have read on HAM sites people are just as happy with it and they say it has more volume then the VX-150 which has me leaning towards the FT-250R. But before I buy, I figured I should at least see if any others are using the FT-250R and if they are happy with it. I can get a new FT-250R ($110) for less then a new or used VX-150. If there is a reason why the VX-150 is better for any reason I'd love to hear that as well.

I can't answer your VX-150 question having bought mine used on craigslist for cheap-ish. The FT-250 has gotten great reviews: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/8271

I was talking to Greblo about the replacements and he noted one caveat.
Some of the newer models may say they are immersible. In Joe's experience this , meant that the PTT jack was screw-in. That limits the kind of remote (see "conversion" below) and may cause othe problems. Check with Joe or just be sure the most common PTT kits will work with the radio before you buy. Joe has the MotoComm sets that many of us presently use with the VX150. It does require a conversion cable to work with the VX, available at HRO.
You may ask Joe if he would set up another HAM license class. Last time it cost about $100 and nearly guaranteed a passing grade on the required test without being a cheat. You will need to have at least 20 people pony up the fee in advance, if the instructors are still available.
