Hey Jim,
Its been a crazy week, and today I am taking 80 Eighth graders to the mountains for a long weekend, and its going to rain/snow. Crazy weather makes teenagers even crazier. Oyyyyyyyy.

I am in for all of these activities. Cruising the Lz's, air coaching........??????

I was flying with Ron on Monday. He ws flyin out in front of the ridge hunting for thermals, while I was on the ridge. Ron found one and waved me over. By the time I got there I was several hundred feet lower than Ron and had to go land. Ron was stunned. I guess my Falcon 1 really does have two speeds: slow and going lower.

Thank you Jim and everyone else involved in helping out the newer members. Just the thought is much appreciated.

Where in the mountains are you heading? I am leaving tonight for a back country snowboard trip in the Sequoia's. I trek in on a splitboard with skins. I do it every year, but this year will be the first with a snowy hike in. Hope my Avi beacon works as it should..

Falcon pilot thermalling tip #1 (they're all #1 at this stage):

Don't leave lift to find lift.

In your case, Matt, you ran into the difference in performance and probably the sink around Ron's good thermal. You didn't say whether there was lift where you were on the ridge but that is usually a good place to wait for the next bubble. Ron would have tracked back to you, if he was upwind and you could have bounced in... or not; you might have gotten pinched off. But if you had lift, your thermal and Ron's might also have merged.

In a Falcon, unless you already have the altitude to cruise around for a while, stay in what you've got or become Joe Greblo; he makes his own thermals, I think.

I am sure your trip to the mountains was more pleasurable than mine. I took 80 eighth graders to a physics camp for three days. I describe this trip in two words: demanding and relentless!

Matt,
It's great that pilots like Ron are helping you. The absolute most important tip I can give you on getting and staying high is to try to notice whenever you see a pilot within glide below you that is going up faster than you at the moment. Without hesitation, fly to him at your best glide or FASTER. If you can get to him within a hundred or two hundred feet of his altitude, you're almost guaranteed to get up and get higher than you started when you left for him.

This is even more true on a Falcon
Keep working on it.

Hey Oscar!!! Your creativity is fantastic!!

Let's try to do some of these at the next Hawk's Second Sunday (this Sunday the 14th). As you know, with a regular fly-in schedule (second sunday of every month), the wind doesn't always cooperate, and it would be great to have some fun "flying related" activities to pass the time during the lulls. Keep thinking and let me know what you come up with by Sunday. I particularly like the set-up/fold-down ideas and the hang glider long jump. Both would build helpful skills and might be entertaining for spectators when there's not enough wind for regular flying. Great ideas!!
