My New Falcon League Weapon

You can thank Busty for loaning me his Freedom 170, the day me and BeerChest rescued Supine Jim's glider from below Towers. I've been bitten w/ the bug ever since and recently lucked out on this 2nd-hand 2008 model. Now that Max is flying my excellent Falcon 3 195 this can turn into a serious duel. Jay, are you listening? Hmmm.

If high-aspect-ratio single-surfaces are allowed in the "FALCON LEAGUE"... Then... we might have to change the rules or the name.

It's just like sail boat racing, or auto racing. The entire point of a common platform race is to eliminate technological advantages. It makes for fun racing.

It really isn't a Falcon league but a single surface league. And Jay paid extra for the all-streamline control frame on his for starters plus everyone has been flying different version of the Falcon and all different types of harnesses anyway. It was never a class competition since the point of the league had more to do with the ability to land safely in far more small bailouts than a topless glider could ever do. Therefore this expanded the XC potential of our flying site during inverted Summer weather. So it really is a short landing field hang glider league and not even a single surface league per se. I hope this clears that up.

I am listening. Sunday I was trying to tempt Sport2's away from the Kagel house thermal. Where were you? Picking up your new weapon? I am not worried. As Juan Corral says, "It's the Indian, not the arrow".

No, actually it makes things really complex. More clarification is needed

So in the newly defined "short landing field hang glider league" I guess Sport 2s are allowed?

Are high aspect ratio double surface gliders that have flaps allowed? Sensors and the sort.


I think the main point would be this. If you want to change the "FALCON LEAGUE" in to a single surface shoot out type comp then... let it be so.

It's just that we have this thing called the "Falcon League," we all have falcons, you had a falcon. And you may be defeating the point of the contest when you have a glider approaching double the glide. Far beyond the benefit of a slippery harness, and fared down tubes.

I have friends who fly Moyes Malibus, WW Harriers, Delta Wing Dreams, Airborne Funs, Seedwings Funkys, etc., etc. Let's exclude all non-Falcon single surface gliders while we're at it.

BTW - The very first day of the league included an Airwave Pulse. Better tell that pilot he's now DQ'd

This was never intended to be a one-design 'class league'. It is a Hang 4 level league because it may involve RFL landings in strange and hazardous places and it has.

Hey All,

I chose to upgrade from my old falcon 1 to a Freedom so that I could continue to fly single surface yet also be able to take part in the "Falcon League" when I get the point when I reach H4. I have no desire to fly double surface at this time and I chose the freedom as something I could get time on now while i am working toward H3 and also be able to have something I can grow into and use in the league.. Maybe it should be called Single Surface league and limit how much percentage of lower surface still is considered an SS wing.

This same thing happens in Sailplanes where there is a 1-26 association, yet even though everyone flys the same glider (asside from different sub models) all of them are modded in some way to add performance...

Right now it could be called the 'defunct league' or the 'hibernation league' because that's the state it's currently in. We now have 3 Freedom 170s and 1 Freedom 190 in the club. Hopefully there will be more in time. The glider has excellent XC potential while retaining very easy handling and good RFL potential. They aren't cheap or abundant on the used market however and therein lies the rub. You can buy a brand new Sport 2 for less or a new U2 for less than a tricked out model.

O.k. I've spoken w/ the powers that be and our new one-design Sylmar SS class league weapon of choice is as follows: (See Meg's post below)
Harnesses will be optional. :P

I'm glad with the outcome of this thread.

I'll be able to compete in the Falcon League with my Sport 2; which is now in the spirit of the friendly competition's original intent.

Racing in a common platform which was based on a platform which: leveled the playing field, low cost, one which we nearly all own... was lame anyway.
