Danny's condition continues to improve. He now has a speech therapist/nutritionist. He had been on a feeding tube that ran down one nostril.
He's a bit more awake than before and his eyes track Olivia's movements as she walks around his room. She was also able to get is glider stowed with help from a neighbor.
Best way to keep abreast of his condition is to show up and ask him. It will probably speed his recovery. I'll try to keep updated but Internet connectivity may be spotty where I'll be staying.

I visited Danny today and found him mostly unresponsive. I was able to get a grunt out of him every now and then when I asked if he could hear me but there was no conversation and his eyes never opened. I would recommend waiting a few days before visiting and hopefully he will be more aware by then.
The good news is that his eyes did not seem swollen and his face looked OK despite the report of a fractured skull from Jonathan.

I visited Danny yesterday afternoon, during a physical therapy session. Olivia thinks he recognized me, and he was responsive to the instructions of the therapist. He was able to stand up, but couldn't remain standing with a walker without support from the therapist and her assistant.
Olivia would like to have better communication from Kaiser. She found out only recently that Danny hung upside down in his harness for nearly 18 hours before being rescued. This she learned from a casual comment by a nurse. If anyone has any strategies for prying information out of doctors, let's share them with Olivia.
Kaiser also says it wants to move Danny to Bakersfield, because they say that he needs "neurological rehab" available only there. This would make it a two-hour drive each way for Olivia.
For severely head-injured patients, constant contact with family and friends is essential to their recovery. Olivia says that Danny has been greatly cheered up by visits from Rome and Rob and other hang gliding buddies. She is also very grateful for the consideration and generous help of Jonathan Dietch throughout her ordeal. So please get over to the Kaiser hospital on DeSoto, near the 101 in Woodland Hills.

My wife and I visited Danny and Olivia last Sunday, after Rome. Danny recognized Ratna but not me, and he spoke of Dana and Fred Ballard. As a punishment, when Ratna and Olivia went down to the cafeteria for a chat, I read to Danny from a National Geographic.
Danny has no bandages, and still has his ratty beard and hair. He speaks in brief statements (not unlike normal), can see with both eyes, likes to sit up, and has strong opinions about the unimportance of the Silk Railway, my reading skills and me in general. Good. He has a 3 minute short-term memory, and enjoys bad jokes (the same one, repeatedly). He worked very hard to remove his compression pads on his legs (which I encouraged), and to take off the neck brace (which I prevented). He is pissed off and fighting to recover, in his own unwise ways. Double good. I think he will recover from his fall into the valley of death, but he needs us to holler to him to move his butt and try harder.
It is possible that he will be relocated up north soon, so if there ever was a time to show your support for SGHA and respect for each other, this would be it -- go see him, stimulate the SOB and make him alert, even angry (just not agitated). Reading to him is good, but probably not from the National Geographic magazine.
His visiting hours are noon to 8 daily. Olivia is there 4 hours daily, but usually goes to feed their dogs in the evening.
