I successfully flew the new mount a week ago on the right wingtip. The mount was made by RAM Mounts. The key component for me was this strap mount pictured here:



This mount can mount on any round tube and has a strap clamp in a compact housing, you won’t have to worry about exposed sharp edges or unwanted loosening.

Couple of other compoents help make this a complete unit:
This part is for connecting to the camera directly and the pipe and associated connections for extending the GoPro.


After I flew with the mount on the right wingtip, I changed the pvc pipe from 12" to 24" (went to Home depot for the PVC). The outside diameter was slightly too small so I made up the difference with some strapping tape. Results below.

I have a few other mounting locations I want to try. But this one off the right hand keel is nice. A higher resolution camera would be nice. Maybe next on the list.

nice mount. thanks for posting the info. i'm sure you got a few other good ones out of the 1000 taken. what about some near the clouds?

Here's a few pictures of the mount I attached yesterday. Unfortunately I neglected to set the correct setting and got a total of 2 pictures yesterday. Once turning on the camera and one turning it off.

Interestingly, this location on the right wing tip (have flown it there twice) actually causes a left turn. The turn would be annoying if it were that bad all the time, however I have only noticed it while attaching a camera. Theories abound, but not sure why it's causing the turn in an opposite direction.

I can't be sure, but my guess based on the pictures, is that the zipper is not completely closed. Then, depending on which way the wind blows, the sail either inflates or deflates. However my guess is that it's high pressure under the sail and the opening is allowing the sail to inflate somewhat increasing lift on that side causing a left turn. I know that the time I forgot to zip that zipper after inspecting the sail my glider (Litesport) flew in a rather scarey manner. However, I don't remember which way it turned and I don't care to repeat the experiment.

You could test the theory with a little duct tape sealing the opening more carefully.
