Wifey and I are going down to La Fonda in Baja for President's day weekend, Saturday and Sunday nights. Plan to fly at La Salina and kick back a little. La Fonda is a nice little place with a great restaurant overlooking the beach.

If you've been there before, you know it's a fun place to be. Just a couple miles up the highway north of La Salina. Hope maybe some other pilots want to come down and join us, the more the merrier. I checked and they have plenty of rooms open at this point. I went there last year for a weekend and it was nice and they have watchmen in the parking lots 24 hrs. to keep an eye on your car.

Last time I was down there, there were families with little 5 year olds running around on the beach. When I came back, the macho Sylmar pilots were telling me, "Hell no, I'm not going down there!"

Yeah, I can carry a couple gliders and a surfboard if you get them to my house.

I go down to Ensenada at least four times a year. La Salina is just up the road. Nothing going on down there but the dogs barking and the grass growing.

I hear tell there's a pretty nice ridge down there with some nice ocean breezes coming straight in. Flying for days. La Fonda is a great little hotel.

I don't think many pilots have fear. Well, that's not true, I have fear of rock climbing and riding a bull to name a few, but I have been to Mexico a few times. I'd go down if I had the time.

I hope you all have fun and the surf is good too, that will make it a perfect trip for those taking there boards with them. Can't beat it; flying and surfing.

When I was in high school; many years ago, I would ski up at Badger pass, then fly mount Bullion. I felt luck and unique. I knew there was a probability that no one else had done that same thing on that particular day, except for me and my two best friends.

So maybe OP will be the only one to fly and surf on that particular day on your trip.

Something to think about as your drinking a cold one afterwards.

I wont go back there any more, here is the history I know about in the last 14 years, Mike Raferty, had a vehicle stolen with hangliders and equipment, Larry Chamblee had his car broken into around $20K between flight gear and camera equipment stolen, Mike Knapp and Phill Bloom were sleeping in a trailer they reached in while they were sleeping and stole there gear. some friends of mine feel asleep on the beach when they woke up one guys shoes, and the other guys jacket were stolen of there bodies. It is fun to go there and the times that I had there fun but not worth the risk, even more so now they pray on travelers than ever before. And the cops are all corrupt.

Sea Bass, I agree that if you "rough it" and sleep out on the beach, you're taking your chances. The plan is to stay at the La Fonda hotel. Last time we were there the manager allowed us to lock up our gliders in one of the bigger rooms they had, so no risk there. Smaller gear stays with you in your hotel room. Our trucks were locked behind their gates, on hotel property, with a security guy walking around. No incidents. No problems.

Just talked to my son who just got back from 5 days next door to La Fonda. Said they had great food, drinks and a great time there and in Ensenada.

We'll be going down early Saturday and maybe flying that day and Sunday if it works out with weather, etc. Send me an email if you want to meet up.

If the ridge isn't on full blast or we want to go on an adventure:

Baja has a 10,000 foot peak. You can drive to the observatorio on its flank that is @ 8700MSL. Let's launch it, and attempt a XC to the town of San Felipe on the gulf. With a 18:1 glide to the beach I wouldn't imagine making it without some healthy thermals. There is a large dry lake right at the bottom in the event of a sled ride.

At best it would be a flight from the pine trees to the beach. At worst it would be a full day adventure driving around the remote high mountains of Baja without flying. If there is any chance we might try this, i'll bring the Sport2. Else just the falcon for me.
