LZ Internet discusion

Now that I have determined that we can run the wiring into the property for Time Warner cable internet using the existing phone conduit I ask this question. Are members interested in having it available in the LZ? I know its not a priority so for now this is only a discussion and I understand our current and past financial situation. Here is some info for questions you might have. Because are address is considered a commercial site we do not qualify for any special introductory rates. For 3mb per second it would be $70.00 a month these rates are more per month for commercial uses. A higher data plan is not in our budget the 3mb per sec might be. I am pretty sure I can get Time Warner to provide the wiring from the pole to the pavilion. Myself and Chippy would do the labor for free, Chippy said he will donate the router and wireless access point that would cover the the majority of the LZ and I will donate the internal wiring and hardware. To cover the cost I was thinking when you get your membership renewal notice there would be a box you could check if you want to contribute like $5.00 to $10.00 a year if its something you would use. I know that some members would not need or use it because now that the cell repeater works they can use their phones even though it is very slow. With the cable wi-fi internet you could also use your phone with a secure network password, it would be much faster. Some other possible future uses for having the service would be internet cameras, internal IP camera to see who is at the front gate and internet music services over a PA. So lets discuss.

I think it is great that you and Chip are offering to do all this work.

I personally would have NO use or interest in this service availability at this time.

I think it's a good idea for future use. If we can get wi-fi into the skies, think about the way technology is progressing, where we could have live streaming of video cameras in a few years. That could only be good for our club and getting new pilots.

Plus it means I can bring my laptop and work when I'm hang waiting, or look up youtube videos of people whacking.

This has been done before and did not work well, it would cause Joe's internet to go down and not fair to him he needs it for his business when its down it costs him money he does more than his share for the club.

I sense that, as for me, wireless internet at the LZ would be of limited value to many members. Everyone shouldn't have to pay for the few that really want to be connected.

However, that doesn't keep Seabass, Chip and any others who would appreciate the access from creating their own group and paying their own way for cable access to the internet. Since they would control the secure access to the wireless, anyone wishing to use the service would have to buy-in to their system. I dont care that it's run out of the LZ; it takes little power to run a modem and router. Space is not a problem. Maybe someone else would complain and provide a counterpoint; I don't think it's significant.

Anyway, the users pay for the service and no one who hasn't paid can use it. When enough members sign on or Seabass installs the 200 inch flatscreen with Netflix and HBO for all, then it can be a club-wide service that benfits the majority.

At the moment, I have no use for it.

First, thanks to you guys for offering what you are. It's unfortunate that the commercial rate is so high. I would say yes at $5 -$10 per year, but I don't think you would get enough payers to cover the ~ $900/ year of cost including tax etc..

Is it really not workable with Greblo? Can we get a higher speed for him that would not go down. Maybe then more speed for everyone would actually cost less for everyone.

I got it! We just get a Starbucks to move in! They put them everywhere. Even better would be a Hooters.

So I guess I'm a yes at $10 or less per year. If higher, I don't know.

Sea Bass-I'm in for a $10 or $20 extra yearly fee. Make it optional. Besides allowing me to work from the comfort of the gazebo, WI FI offers us the chance to implement other services, as you rightly point out.

Romen "WIFI" is Italian for "Wife".

Maybe Erwin could get a consumer grade internet service or we could always get a low speed Virgin Mobile which is wireless. I'm still trying to think of the benefits of WiFi in the LZ: watching theKagel Cam, Camp 9,uploading GPS logs, running a Whack cam,....

The address is considered commercial by Time Warner and Verizon even Erwin pays commercial rates for his line. Currently we pay $40.00 a month for phone service we are changing to Time Warner voice over IP for 24.95 a month with a 3 year commitment & free installation (depending on a free site evaluation from Time Warner I am waiting for a return phone call so this can be scheduled), to add internet the price is an additional $58.90 a month for 3mbps so in total its would be $83.80 a month for both. So if you subtract the $40 a month from removing the Verizon land line the overage would be $43.85 a month x 12= around $530 a year. Members who contribute will get the network pass phrase and use of the wi-fi on there smart phones and laptops. I will be starting a list of contributors along with what they want to contribute per year when I reach the $530.00 for the first year I will notify all on the list, that we will be moving forward and to give me the money next time they see me or leave the contribution in the gray drop box in the LZ.

If you wondering why 3mbps internet speed, since were commercial 7mbps would be $110 per month and 10mbps would be $300 per month. The 3mbps is in our price range and its plenty fast for what we would use it for.

As for contributions for the following years when you receive your SHGA membership renewal there could be a box you can check with a amount you want to contribute and you could just add that to your renewal fee.
