But since you did ask, here is the secret. Set your vairo to "beep" mode. Then fly towards the beeps. If you find a lot of beeps stay there by flying in a circle. Don't over think it.
I can't wait to try out this secret beep mode!

Great flight today with the most amazing invention ever: SINK ALARM (OK maybe not the most amazing but pretty darn good)

Working on sink management has been a great help. And hearing my vario whine like it's about to die definitely helped me to realize when I was sinking and to speed up or turn a bit more and get back into the thermal. I never really got that low (apart from once), so had a nice long flight. Malury, thanks for the tip.

I think Windsports can teach you a few ways to thermal. Sometimes I try a few different techniques on a given day to see what works best, like when winds are altering the thermals a lot. When you are low close to terrain its a different story and also if you are not in range of an easy LZ, 10 to 50 ft/min can be a blessing . Its funny sometimes(high enough)I just let go and let the glider thermal by it self, and it will do a better job on its own than me, when I over control it.

After you get an hour in the air, or less, I would throw away your altitude and get low and thermal back up. Repeat that 20 times per flight. Low saves build character. You don't build as many skills just hiding out at the top of a thermal but that comes in handy if a sink cycle lingers and everyone sinks out.

When you arrive over the LZ its good practice thermal from there back to launch, but watch for traffic.

You're welcome Mike. It's gratifying to have some knowledge to offer. I hope you share this with your fellow new pilots.

Lately I have been trying to become more sensitive to what the glider is trying to tell me about the air I am in. I go to trim and hold the base tube with my finger tips. Is a wing rising? Falling? (lift or sink nearby)

Are you side-slipping or yawing? (Slipping left and yawing right without pilot input could indicate a strong thermal on your left.)

Even if I don't understand these motions there is information in them and later I may learn why it happened.
The glider is talking to me, I'm just too dense to get it.
Then the glider gets pissed off.

When my glider starts talking, I usually stop drinking. Better not piss her off either, or she may never speak to you again.

Pretty soon you will need Malury to teach you how to get back down. A lot of it I think is mind over matter. Its your ability to convince yourself "I'm not going to sink out" or "I'm going to find a way to get back up"

This Star Wars Force Trainer toy demonstrates.

Can't wait to buy one of those things and just sit in the LZ, sipping a beer and controlling gliders.
