My name is Matt Rose and I'm the founder of the California Association for Paranormal Studies, or CAPS Paranormal for short.
My reason for contacting you is that me and my team will be taking part in this years Red Bull Flugtag in San Francisco on November 10th and we are in search of materials for our craft.
We are looking to see if anyone would be willing to donate any material or sponsor us in any way. We have already been lucky enough to have some sail cloth, Dacron, donated to us by Joe Greblo from Windsports International.

The world record for the flugtag is a 7.6:1 glide.
This could easily be beat by modifying a commercial glider to have the appearance of "home made"
However to stick with your original idea I can give you some pointers.
Probably the main reason flying machines "pearl" and don't even appear fly even so briefly is pitch stability.
Finding the center of gravity of the flying machine before is key to this. If you spend a few minutes trying to make try and get the CG behind the Center of Lift. You will have a near flying machine.
Here are some other ideas:
3: Use side wires. It reduces the weight considerably. Trying to make a cantilevered wing is really heavy.
1&2: Find the CG
4: If you can find the CG and put a bit of reflex in the wing, the rear empennage is unnecessary.
Reduce the weight of the pilots platform and chair.
