I started flying in 1973 and thought the gliders of the day were a bit primitive, but don't remember seeing this guy anywhere.

Designed and first flown by Sir George Cayley around 1853. The replica in the photo was flown in 1973 by Derek Piggott.

Even teathered I can't imagine saying "looks good, I'll go first" in that contraption. Big brass ones for sure.

Reading more carefully, I see that it was first flown by Sir George's coachman. "...after the short flight Cayley's coachman stated that he had been hired to drive a coach not to fly a glider. " Also, it seems that for his first, smaller version he enlisted the services of a ten year old boy. They might not have been brass after all.
