I once had the idea to spread sand where a road should go and then melt it with a mirror and lens in orbit. If the road cracks later just reheat it.

Actually Dave, Your idea about focusing solar power to melt roadway is genius!
In most locations you wouldn't even need to bother with the sand.
We're gonna need a lot of hot dogs, some coat hangers and some marshmallows
