H.G. Harnesses

Post by Steve Nootenboom »

Consider my thoughts on hang-gliding harnesses:
The most common complaint I hear is "I can't get upright on landing" some times I hear about comfort but not much. I flew a C.G. 1000 for 25 years until it wore out. During that time I got to test fly just about every harness coming on the market. I wanted something new, I really wanted these harnesses to work. But no way, these were not even going to work.

The CG allows me to keep my hands on the bar at all times by adjusting my position with the foot bar at my feet. Which is great on approach Because I like to get upright and dirty for drag on glide path and I can quickly go prone if I am coming up short, all with my hands on the bar. Landing my glider requires both hands. I pull my feet off the bar at about 2' off the ground. For laughs watch me land my Atos VR for the first ever, in my CG on a down hill slope. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nX2NlXihwc Look at the upright position.

I know several old XC legends that will never part with their CG. The CG 1000 Is as streamline as it gets with plenty of storage options. There is no more Covert ( didn't you get the memo?) But you can order a brand new CG 1000 today at flycenterofgravity@gmail.com or call Jordan at 315-256-1522 She is great to work with and the quality of her work is excellent. A base price at 1k ? Works for me.

Pros: Very upright landing position. Semi-Slippery design.

Cons: You can't compete with a chute container in your glide. Every modern harness puts them out of the flow. Covert and Matrix has this done in a better manner.

chute placement

Post by gregangsten »

That's true about chute placement, but there is one more thing to consider. Having the chute mounted at your chest gives you a lot of padding in case of a crash. My one blown launch had me turning back into the hill which was more like a cliff. I landed hard on my chest and was very happy to have it there.

Word GregA, I know it takes maybe a point of my high speed glide, it's nice to know I'm strapped into my Zorb. Makes hang checks a little more complicated though.

That glass ball looks like one of Van Noppen's works.

I like having my legs under me when I land especially in rough terrain. That harness might work for me too. I like a big chest mounted chute as an air bag too. If you can get your legs under you you can absorb 18 mph impacts like skydivers do.

I saw Spitfire's new CG1000. Well constructed. Well laid out harness. Clean and just well done. Not sloppy in the least. In my mind, the Z5 has a problem in the market. Much more elegant for the same price. Thank you CG1000 for existing and competing.

Yea, Windsports has it. It does need a chute rigged. This is also a good time to have a pro-repack done.

Spend some time hanging in it before you fly. Use the WS simulator or a beam in the Geezbo. In the air, practice zipping up and down a few times. Before landing unzip super early your first time.

I'm impressed on the quality and materials used. I've never flown one, but its reputation of giving an up right landing position is well known.
