Hello Sylmar Pilots,
Many of you have already gotten the email message, but in case you've missed it, our club will be meeting with San Diego Mayor Faulconer this week to discuss a number of topics regarding the Torrey Pines Gliderport. Among those topics is the possibility of getting USHPA site insurance for Torrey Pines through the Torrey Hawks. This would be similar to the RC pilots (who carry their own insurance) and the sailplane pilots (who purchase their own insurance as well).
Furthermore, if the City is willing to accept the Torrey Hawks club operating at Torrey Pines under our own insurance it could open up a bunch of other possibilities which would be great for the sport of hang gliding.

I sympathize with your PG/HG conflict with a weird no-bid PG concessioneer running Torrey. I still haven't made it out to your site because of this issue. I'm a high hour H3 prohibited from there. Yet I've flown Funston many times.
Question for you: It seems that HGing is in a demographic death spiral. To keep Sylmar alive how would you recommend attracting more PGs our way? I'd rather navigate a sea of jellyfish (PGs) over a sterile sky. From your experience, how do you make the sky as equitable for all free flight peeps?

Those are tough questions. Forunately, I think that Joe Greblo's school is very important to keeping Sylmar alive. I'd have never flown there without Joe - no wise cracks please. : )
So I wouldn't think HG at Sylmar is in the same "death spiral" as HG has been in San Diego.
I do think that people who have a love of flight will find their way to the sky on one form of wing or another. At Sylmar, that's mostly a hang gliding wing. At Torrey, they make it very easy to chose a PG instead. At Crestline, I think they get a very good representation of both.
I don't think those are very good answers, but as I said, those are tough questions. But what I do believe is that USHPA will continue to move toward PG and they will eventually consider HG as being insignificant. I think that in the long run, hang gliding will need its own organization if it is really going to survive. That's what the US Hawks is all about.
