Burgis, Hayden and I took a grueling bike ride up the road to the top of Big Tujunga Saturday. We started off of Foothill Blvd about a mile past Wheatland offramp. The road is a long one, mostly in good condition but with a lot of large rocks in some places. For the most part, it doesn't seem much worse than Kagel but not friendly for passenger cars. There are two gates we jumped on the way up from Foothill. It may be that the road is private, at least at this entrance. There seems to be someone living in a trailer at an intersection on the way up. Hayden believes that there is another entrance somewhere down in the Big T wash that may be the way we used so long ago. The Forest Service marks many trails in the area.
At the top, the launches are overgrown; twenty-some years without use will do that. Rob checked out one potential site that might be serviceable after a crew of machete-wielding, fly-horny pilots visit and one that may be used with just the removal of a large bush (he tells me the same is true for Lukens).
There may also be access from points at Wheatland Ave. and in Little T canyon. We came down by way of Goldhill, a road you all might have noticed on the way up to Kagel. This will NOT be an access point. The road is private (posted No Trespass) and, as someone reported in the past, not passable. Actually, at one point, the road simply doesn't exist anymore. It is somewhere at the bottom of a canyon with the rest of the hill above it (thanks again to the Kagel Road Crew for preventive measures!).
At the last BOD meeting, the discussion indicated that permission to enter for the Big T and Lukens sites may not be too far away. The new Forest Service supervisor of our area is apparently flight friendly. If access is granted, get the 4X4s out and bring your chain saws.
