Sylmar Hang Gliding Association

Rob Sherwood and I attempted to get to the newly approved Lukens H4 launch on Saturday. There appear to be 3 (or 4?) roads to the top. We heard from Joe Greblo that the one nearest the LZ is under construction. So we went to the two that are off of Hwy 2. Both of these are still locked due to construction. Nobody was at the ranger station, so we couldn't get more information. Rob lives near this road up, so he will get a lock and make arrangements with the forest service to have it installed on the daisy-chain when the road is finished. Current rumor has it that will be about 5 weeks from now.

By the way; To use the road, one needs two things: 1) a copy of the permit and 2) the combo to our lock. I will post the combo here and have someone on the BOD post the permit for all SHGA members to download. All that will happen about the time the road opens. Be patient, please.

Also, we may need to do some launch/brush clearance on this launch. Rob and I couldn't get up there to verify the state of the launch.

I'd be willing to bet that after we clear the launch and have bit of experience with it, the rating will be lowered. At this time, I see no reason for it to remain a H4 launch other than we have no experience with it right now. But that's just my opinion.

Oh, and theoretically, the Mt. Wilson launch is now open to any H4 with a copy of the permit. Unfortunately, there are no LZs available for this launch yet. We are working on it.
