Some of you know that I work at the Getty Museum (The J. Paul Getty Trust). Over the last several years there has been a swarm of controversy about our antiquities collection and their acquisition.
The link provided will debut in the New Yorker this month and sheds some light on the world we live in today at the Getty. Since several people have and continue to express interest in the story I present it here so you can get a bit more background into the story.
It's a bit of a read, but interesting if you like to know the inner workings of art dealings.

Interesting article. Way better than the LA Times coverage.
In the 1980's, when I worked in the Office of International Affairs in the Criminal Division of the Justice Department, I arranged the execution of a request from a French Magistrate for an interview with J. Carter Brown, then curator of the National Gallery of Art, with respect to allegations that some French paintings had been removed from France in violation of the French law on national art treasures, and had found their way into the National Gallery.
For the meeting, Mr. Brown had the paintings in question on easels in his unbelievably commodious office, which was a studio whose entire east wall is a window, several stories high, with an unobstructed view of the U.S. Capitol. Ritzy titzy.

Your giving Indiana Jones a bad name. Thats what he does is retrieve art and antiquities. If America gave back all of nonindigenous art and museum pieces, we would have nothing left but stuffed cougars, eagles, bears, coyotes, beavers, a buffalo skin, some arrowheads, a tee pee, a few cave paintings, and peace pipe. We conquered Italy fare and square back in the 1940's we should get to keep the stuff. If America pulled all of its troops out of that area of the world it would be only a few years before the Taliban made its way to Italy and we've seen what they do to art and statues.
