World Capital of Hang Gliding? WTF?

Sylmar does represent an important historical location in the developmental of free flight. A thread discussing how we should recognize this will require a lot of random pictures of photo shopped IUDs and weird flying machines.

Also... Doug, plz don't call my religion a "myth." That's racist. Let's have respect for everyone's beliefs. May Zeus have mercy on you.

Oh, we don't hold world championship competition? That surely excludes us from being the capital?

I proclaim...
Whereas we where the cradle of modern human free flight.
Whereas we are situated in one of the largest and wealthiest cities on the planet.
Whereas we are one of the larger flying clubs.

Now, therefore I proclaim. We are the "World Capital of Hang Gliding"

A quick Googling reveals that:

Sylmar is the ONLY location identified as "The World Capital of Hang Gliding" by multiple sources, and is called that in many, many places on the internet, including those in foreign lands and languages.

The only others are these 2 obscure single references to other locations

At this lone site http://outpostusa.org/Expeditions/Outer ... iding.html They proclaim Hatteras, NC as the World Capital of HG.

And at this lone travel site: http://experiencemyfrance.com/featured ... l-leisure/ Millau, France is claimed to be it.

In 99% of all references to a "World Capital of Hang Gliding", Sylmar is it.

Regardless of what other criteria you may feel is better, the fact is that the world considers that Sylmar is the World Capital of Hang Gliding, so take it up with the U.N.

Until some other city makes their case and convinces the world otherwise, it seems to me we are the capital by history, tradition, common understanding, volume and quality of references, and default.

If it need to be defended for some reason of trademark or such in a court of law, this would easily be sufficient to make the case. There are arguments that you could make to say it should be somewhere else, but the fact is that it just isn't somewhere else. It's Sylmar, CA.

There is no arguing that. We could go further and be The Center of the Universe for Hang Gliding, currently Mingus mountain claims the title. I thing with minimal legal fees we can take the title and copy write it.

My thought was we get a lawyer to do it contingent of us wining, once we get the title aliens from all over the galaxy will come to fly we will make a killing on alien bobble heads titled AREA 52 Sylmar Hang Gliding Capitol of the Universe. I would say within a month we could pay George back have a surplus and build the first Alien Hotel in the planet. So you see Don you need to spend money to make money.

This sounds like the logic the politians (Republicans mostly) use to justify tax cuts. Cut taxes and the money will pour in!

I personally have tried this numerous times. I spend money and expect my wallet will soon be refilled and over flowing with more money. Part of it works - the spend money part! The refilled and over flowing with more money hasn't happened - YET.

I think you have the definitions of spending and cutting mixed up.

If your kids spend more, you have less, but if you cut their allowance you have more.

It would be easier to get a copyright or trademark if we change the spelling to a more unique form. I suggest

World Capital of Hung Gliding

That may not apply to all of us, though.

Janyce you just have to look at it slightly differently the club has pilots from all over the world far as I know they come from Mexico Columbia Russia Switzerland Austria Israel Japan GERMANY and more. I apologize to those pilots if I didn't mention their country so Janyce you see the club is represented by the world. If you want to complain you should complain about the world serious in baseball I don't see no other nations playing in it, I guess you have to call it the world serious otherwise nobody else would watch it, and there his Super Bowl unique name unique sport and that's why it's one of the most watched event in the world, so if you want to change the slogan I'm all for it how about Super World capital of Hang Gliding.

Actually baseball is played all over the world. It was added to the Olympics in 1992. American football (as opposed to soccer) is not. Good point though about having pilots from all over the world. The whole dispute might hinge on it being the capital. As an analogy, Benicia, Monterey, San Jose, Sonoma, and Vallejo were all, at different times, the Capital of California. Does that mean that Sacramento is not the capital now? I like the proposal by Lawrence, "Manger of Heathen Hedonism, involving foot-launched aviation and some beer?" However, I would put the question mark one word to the left. Just saying!
