On Wikipedia, in almost unintelligible English, Governador Valadares, a Brazilian city in the state of Minas Gerais, claims the title too.
We can't let that stand. They don't even speak American there! I bet they don't even eat Pop Tarts like all real red-blooded pilots do.

The US mounted a secret operation in an undisclosed decade called "Operation Glider Title Rectification". A plan to invade the beaches of Brasil, march inland, climb the mountain and place a "Brasil" sticker over the word "World" on a plaque that claims they are the world capital of hang gliding.
Unfortunately the invasion team was caught off guard by dozens of Women on the beach in Brazilian string bikinis and they refused to march inland, resulting in total failure. Since then all efforts by the United Nations to promote conservative bikinis on Brazilian beaches has been ineffective as well as an import wax ban for Brazilian bikini waxes.
