I checked the crime map 3/2012 to current and saw no crime within visual sight from anywhere on SHGA land. Current policy of the BOD is working well.

LAPD sends data to the omega group and can view it in a google map style interface.

Drones I say. A lot of us are quite good with rc so why not invest in a state of the art surveillance drone to menacingly patrol the LZ? Erwin can control it from his RV.

did you know that (some time ago) fred b. put his vidio equipment into a pilots locked car . when he landed , he found a SMASHED window and no gear. i put a visitor sign in sheet in the l.z. use it on strangers!! rome

There are things that crooks find highly irritating an usually keeps them away: cops, nosy people, questions, and cameras.

The cops used to come around occasionally. Does someone know those guys? Could they be asked to visit more often.

I think that should be a last resort. I think just blatantly taking pictures, even saying things like "smile and hold still" followed by a few questions will work. That applies to strangers in general, whether homeless, gang banger, or just neighborhood wuffo.
After all, we want to know who is on club property
How about actually using the automatic gate? How about keeping the side gate closed with a "Private Property" sign on it?

The BOD recently voted to keep the gate open from 9:30 am until dusk. This gate schedule is designed to ENCOURAGE visitors, and not lock out tandem passengers that arrive early.
In general, visitors are good for this sport and we do not want to lock them out.

As a local resident, non-flyer and SHGA supporter (and sometimes visitor to the LZ), I appreciate your concerns about potential issues from unwanted visitors looking to do harm.

Since you have facilities and (will) have electricity, I like your ideas for adding security cameras and suggest you add enough to ensure you cover the entire area (road/driveway, gazebo, etc.). And your idea to "meet and greet" unknown visitors is also wise.

Unfortunately Sylmar does, like all cities, have crime issues. Your efforts to protect your site also protects the surrounding neighborhood so this issue should always (IMO) be taken seriously.

In thirteen years I've been here, I can't think of to many times we've had problems. We don't have issues with organized crime, thief's, or homeless. There is one person I know about, and other members know who he is by sight. If he is seen on our property, he'll be confronted.

A few cameras will be cool.

There has been a family, which comes over to hang out, and enjoy the gazebo. They even lie in the grass, and seem to enjoy it. I've also seen a woman, who lives in the neighborhood, sitting at one of the benches, teaching her kids under flashlight. I thought it was pretty inspiring.

If we make it clear that the LZ is closed after a certain time of day, I believe that will take care of prolonged, loitering.

We were given 50k and in return, I think we should welcome the public to come in and enjoy it...since it was their tax dollars, which was, and will be applied, to our past, and future projects.

There is no doubt the gazebo can do some amazing things, which are out side the realm of hang gliding. In turn it could bring the community closer, in turn they might extend themselves to look out for our interests.

A Barbeque pit will be nice. I think that will take some creative thinking, and a pizza oven would also be cool. We could have pizza, chili, and BBQ at the fly-ins.

If we get restrooms, we should do the same. Industrial programmable lock 300$. Don't worry it has a panic bar on the inside, you can't get locked in.
