Hey Rob, (and you too Ron!),

Great job flying to Crestline Saturday!

I have a Gopher Trap question:

What type of trap did you use? Is there any trick to placement? Do you need bait, and if so, what did you use? I had one of the little buggers in my yard last year and managed to get rid of it by collapsing tunnels and then using one of those "noisemakers." But I have another one. (Or more.)

Inquiring minds want to know!

I hear he has a fully developed training program. You may want to ask his recent alumni (Jim Thompson) how comprehensive the program is. But from the results, I'd say that the results speak for themselves.

George,

The traps are designed to be inserted into the hole with a metal plate that blocks the gopher's path. There is no bait. When the gopher presses on the plate (to push it out of the way), metal spikes some up from both sides and hit him in the sides, either penetrating him or going over the top and crushing him is it is small.

It is best to locate the "main run", where the tunnel is going 2 directions and the gopher is traveling without pushing dirt up the vent hole (surface mounts). Place a trap in both directions within the main run and you usually get him (or trip the trap) within a day.

I know nearly diddly about gophers, other than that they are rodents and live underground. Thus the input is most useful.

Oh, and a further question: Is the compost made from gophers?

As to your question of what the compost is made of:
The present compost is NOT made from gophers; however the present gophers WILL become compost!

By the way, dead gopher number 24, bagged yesterday, is quitely composting in his former hole...

The dead count continues to climb. 2 more bagged today - one was the bastard that was digging up the path between the barbeque and the gazebo. The other was near the overshoot hill, where there are 3 other traps currently set. I believe there is still more activity in that area but I am on them!

The dead count is 26.

2 more fuzzy bastards bagged today. ANOTHER one was pulled out of the same hole between the barbeque and the gazebo, despite the first one being stuffed back in 2 days before. And yet another snapped near the horse trail near the overshoot hill.

I am beginning to think that they are now coming in as fast as I bag them. Whatever. Let them come. They are in for a rude surprise.

The dead count is 28, and counting...

Number 29 bagged yesterday. 5 more traps set - marked by pink flags (curtesy of Rome). There is one operating on the bull's eye that has beaten me twice already. He has a lot of nerve digging holes on my landing spot. He will die.

2 more augered in today. One right in front of the barbeque and another out by the horse trail. The one gopher that continues to elude me is the one on the bull's eye. I set no new traps today - I am giving him a day off for being as smart as he is, and because I was lazy. He will of course be done in soon enough because NO gopher has dodged me forever. His only chance is to get out of town by sundown.

The dead count is 31.

2 more gophers were whacked today but the bull's eye gopher continues to elude death. 4 additional traps were set near the horse path and I expect additional whacks tomorrow. The latest gopher kills seem to be adolecents. I think I am dealing with the offspring of those done in already. Whatever their source, they will not reach adulthood.

Dead count - 33

LAWN UPDATE - Darrel and I spread the last of the compost this morning and I am now applying "weed and feed" to the lawn to kill the clover grass and fertilize the "good" grass. Within the next day or two I will apply the grass seed and complete the weed and feed application. From that point on the hardest part is done. Now we just water the hell out of it for a couple of weeks and see what grows!

When you see Darryl, please thank him for his hard work in distributing the compost. He put more work into that than anyone else.

Another gopher whack today. But the bull's eye gopher has eluded me for the 5th time. This dude is by far the smartest one I have dealt with in this LZ. What he doesn't know is that I only have to win ONCE and the game is over. He WILL die; he just doesn't know it yet.

Dead count = 34.

The last of the grass seed has been applied. Now it's time to wait and watch, and hope that not too many new gophers decide to drop in.

I have plenty of supplies to last me a long time down here. Try & get me you son of a motherless goat. I will avenge the deaths of my fellow brothers one ankle at a time, as I am shure you remember the pain you went through the last time you stepped in the front door of my home 5 years ago when you fell into my trap HA-HA-HA-HA sucka!!!

As for the new grass bring it more food for my El Cariso Park brothers comming soon!

The bull's eye gopher is now HISTORY, along with one other today. In fact, he is now hanging from the gazebo with a sign attached to his tail. A nice fat one, he WAS; he looks just like his picture! See what happens when you talk shit to the GOPHER HUNTER?

Like I said, I only need to win ONCE and now it is over forever for that dude.

I cant believe that theres identity theft going on with gophers that picture & post is fake I dont even have children & the acting is horrible. Sadly, someone was uncomfortable with the hanging gopher in the gazebo during breakfast Saturday and it was discarded... He was a bigun though!

The groundskeeper in Caddyshack played by Bill Murray was Carl Spackler!

But Rob is fairing much better with our gophers than Carl did with his...
