Not to fear, Doug. Rob has been stockpiling the tactical nukes and holding them in reserve for just such a gopher-wave, banzai-style incursion. If you wish to participate in the carnage-to-come, bring that quantum-buster, disruptor weapon you've been keeping in your trunk and set it for a depth of 12 inches.
A new gopher popped up between the trees and the gazebo, right in our breakdown area - the nerve! His bravery has been recognized and duly rewarded with the "jaws of steel" award. I am thinking that he may have been an advanced scout sent in by those massing for the big counter attack that Doug was speaking of.
The DEAD COUNT is now 48. I predict that we will see 50 by the end of the month as I currently see signs of "infestations" coming in from the north. I think the main force may be opon us soon and explosives might need to be employed.

Explosives?! Rob has officially gone over to the Dark Side. Hangin' out with Rome lately, huh? Next Rob'll be pulling his truck up to the holes with his pool-vacuum hose attached to the exhaust. Maybe one of you great-white-hunter wannabes should give Rob a break before he starts seeing flying rodents on the rampage. Think Tremors III with gophers.
The half century mark has been achieved.
Gopher number 50 was put out of commission yesterday.
I grow weary of the chase - this might be a good time for me to retire from the gopher "cleaning" business...
Just kidding!

No don't stop! Think of it as whack-a-mole that you don't even have to pay for. (The traps are already paid for, right?)
And you get kudos from your buds (no pun intended.)
Puulleeeeezzzzz keep whacking those gophers. 50. Wow. I never suspected that many. Or maybe we are gathering them from all over the neighborhood.
Rob is doing a public service!

Number 51 was done in on Saturday morning before the meeting.
Apparently my activities were the topic of some discussion that day. A women that I have never met approached me with her concerns about possibly removing gophers "humanly". I told her the same thing I have stated to others: show me how and I will do it. Somebody else told me how the people at the Andy Jackson Flight Park "live in harmony" with their gophers. I say the only way to "live in harmony" is to accept the risk of a broken ankle. I have already had one and do not want another thank you!

I have to agree with Rob on this one.
Despite being strongly in favor of wild critters, there are limits. When the ants enter my house, they die. Outside, I deal with it. The same with our LZ. It's a landing zone. We land on our feet. We cannot be looking down when we land, and probably not while we walk our gliders to the breakdown area. (And that's not even considering the grass damage.)
Rob has not ventured out of the LZ to whack the gophers. He's only getting the ones that enter the LZ. I've done a bunch of research on this too, and there is no real practical way to get them "humanely." Everyone I've checked with, and all the online forums with people trying to do it humanely end up the same way: Using lethal spring traps like Rob, or living with gophers. I'm perfectly happy to live with them elsewhere, but not in the LZ.
But just like Rob, I'd love to know another solution if there really is one.
BTW, the "noisemaking" gopher-annoyance devices don't really seem to work all that well. The best people seem to claim is that they slow (not stop) new gophers from entering the area. They don't drive them away once they've settled in. If anyone cares enough about doing this humanely, you could always donate a bunch of these (and batteries each few months). Oh, and install and maintain them too! That would (idealy) cut down on the new gophers, thus lowering their death rate. If you aren't willing to do that, then it seems to me you shouldn't complain to or about Rob, since you aren't willing to do what it takes to improve the humaneness of his efforts.

the reason rob has such great landings is this:
he KNOWS that the l/z is psycho--it loves to break spirits and bones. so all these gophers? they are just an attempt to placate the monster. (you see it in mythology all the time.) the whole virgin thing is a bit hackneyed, so he picked an animal that is the human equivalent of lice....and REALLY gets on the l/z's nerves....
i wonder what kraig and jonny do.....

There goes Janyce educating me again. I thought Osama and company were the human equivalent of lice.
Can we stay on topic? Gophers are pests in a lawn just as rats in an attic. This isn't the wild prairie where we need their aeration activities; they are much too destructive for the benefit. My wife was also the victim of a terrorist gopher. Two screws in her ankle and she was fine again... except when it's going to rain.
I think that nearly everyone is extremely appreciative of Rob's eradication efforts and, since this club rules by majority, gopher lovers can land in the wash, if they wish to protest.

Maybe you could call them by name Rob!!!! Maybe they'll come out and play!!!!
Or, maybe you can whistle to them like you're call a dog!!!
Hehehehe. Just couldn't resist Rob.
You're doing it the only way that I know of also!!!!!!
After being nearly gopher free for almost a month, 3 new varmits have recently appeared and decided to test their luck under our turf. 2 have been eliminated over the past 2 days (one near the bulls eye and one near the horse trail). The remaining gopher popped up in front of the barbeque and has been given a stern warning never to return. If he pops up again I may have to whack him.
I have been doing pretty good at removing new gophers as they appear in the LZ. I only wish I could do as well at home. I have been unscuccessful at removing 2 gophers that have been tearing up my lawn for a couple of weeks now...
The (LZ) count is 53
