Finally back in the air again!

Post by Mike Blankenhorn »

Hi All,
I am very happy to resume my hang gliding adventures. It has been well over a year since I crashed on the backside of Kagel and by the time I healed from cracked ribs and a broken collar bone I had no job, no vehicle, and no money. Now that things are getting better again I reinstated my USHPA and SHGA memberships as well as glider storage at the LZ.
I went into this sport fully accepting all risks so I am not going to tell you that this experience was a huge wake up call, it was not. It was not a surprise either. It was however a vivid reminder to pay fucking attention! I had no business enjoying the scenery behind me, that's what got me into trouble to begin with. Always pay attention to what the ground is doing, right?
One of my goals is to fly XC and with proper guidance I will acquire the skills to do so. This week I will be at dockweiler to practice my take off and landing technique and Jonathan was talking to me about the loop at CSS, which will be open again in a few weeks according to Rob McKenzie.
I am looking forward to flying with you again. :D
Take Care,
Mike Blankenhorn

Welcome back Mike! I thought you were out for good. Glad to hear that isn't the case. When you finally make your appearance at Kagel, would you mind wearing your bunny costume so we can pick you out of the crowd of newbies? (Lawndart, specifically, asked; something about an event in his childhood...)

Hey Mike,
If you don't mind me asking, what happened? And more specifically, what were the circumstances that caused your accident? I'm just starting out and while I hate reading about other people getting hurt, I try and learn from those incidents and hopefully keep myself from getting caught in a similar situation. I'm sorry to hear you've been out for so long, but I'm glad to hear you're getting back into it!!

blown over the back

You have more gumption than most people who would vanish after an accident like that. Years ago I did the same thing on my Pulse the first time I flew in stronger winds. Luckily for me I was able to flare it into the Manzanita bushes back there and come out unscathed.
Welcome back.

Welcome back. I know what a challenge it can be to suit up again after a scary bonk. I look forward to flying with you -- bunny suit or not.
