New storage tubes

In a world run by Hugo Chavez it might be possible for the USHPA to dictate all hang glider storage be mandated to cost $10 a month in order to promote the sport and hang glider sales.
A few years ago when I learned of the 10% storage management fee I entertained the idea of charging half of what Jay gets and bid for the position my self. My mainstay profession is programming the Progress 4GL Database for fortune 500 companies and would be able to use that technology to manage the storage with very few keystrokes on my part and utilizing unix cron scheduling to run reports and create letters.

I'm struggling to complete all the stuff for the doors on this storage cell today, so I'm still not sure if I can make tomorrow. I'll post here later today and let you know, but I had a few things for you to consider in the mean time:
1) I'm concerned about the relative air tightness of these tubes. If any water gets in by accident or even if you have to put your glider away a little wet some night, it's gonna mildew with that moisture trapped in there.
2) If water were to get in, then it would run toward the back rather than the front. This would be bad, since you might not even know it's in there, and getting it out when it's down at the opposite end of those tubes would be a hassle. Therefore, I'm suggesting we:
Take all the tubes out then go in and attach a 2x4 (1.5" thick) to the floor, all the way in the back. and a 1" (3/4" thick) halfway to the front. Then slide the tubes back in on top of them. This will provide a down hill flow for any water that gets in, thus preventing a tough problem later. That's my suggestion, but I don't have time to do it, unless we do it on Saturday.
3) Tube numbering: I don't know if anyone has thought of it, but these new tubes need numbers. I'd suggest we identify each "box" with a letter and each tube with a number starting with 1 each time. So: the old box becomes Box "A", new box= "B", this brand new "box" were working on is "C", and the tubes inside become C-1, C-2, though C-8. Then when you say: "put my glider in tube C- 6", your personal assistant will know right where it is in the LZ without looking around.
I expect these new doors will come nice and painted,and without numbers. I hope we can get some decent numbers rather than just spraying with a stencil, which will likely run and look crappy.
Anyway that's my suggestions. I'll let you guys know later today if were on for Saturday installation.

i have used the numbering system like high rises and appartment buildings. the first box was 100 series and the second box 200 series. few people seem to catch on though so I am willing to change.

i never heard of that backpack thingie so i called my good friend stephen hawking, who is smarter than ken and is only mystified by women, to get his impressions. the view is that with the eminent collapse of the euro we might be able to get one cheaper than what we paid for the pavilion but the higgs-boson is good for creating matter out of the energy of empty space and we might end up with a whole litter of cats!

OK, I finished the construction and I'm starting to paint it all. I chose the color paprika, because it might match the railing redwood and it will hide any rust that develops. We can certainly repaint it if nobody likes it, but I had to get it painted before bringing it so no rust starts. I'm using rust proofing primer and paint.
I had to build it mostly from memory, and it turned out more complicated than I expected, so I give it a 50/50 chance of fitting and working correctly when I get it there. It's massive, but it needed to be to meet all the competing requirements of strength, security, longevity, and be mostly weatherproof. We'll see what happens tomorrow.
I expect to deliver it about 9:30 am. I will have a guy with me, but will still need help. Don't take the tubes out until I get there. I have to check something first.
One thing that someone can do without me there is clear out the dirt in front of the cell. The door hangs about 3 inches below the opening in the concrete, and will swing out on a 6 foot arc, so we need that cleared out and level.
One thing I didn't anticipate is that the door is heavy. It's one piece and hangs out 72 inches. That's a huge amount of force on the hinge, and I think the door may need a wheel to support it. It's reinforced steel sheet, but all the parts that wear metal to metal are stainless - the hinges, lock tabs and attachment points.
I'll also bring the wood wedges I suggested earlier for under the tubes. I don't think we need anything other than elbow grease.

After a long day of work with a crew of dedicated club members pitching in, we solved a number of challenges and got the new storage unit installed with 8 new tubes ready to rent. I hear that most of them are already rented and going fast, so jump on it if you want one.
Thanks to everyone that helped today. It was a bit of a challenge, and though it seemed we would have to settle for only partial victory by late afternoon, we collected our battle weary forces for a final thrust late in the day, and we defeated the forces of chaos, by even getting the big outer door installed against all odds.
I'll bring out the locking mechanism for the big door early tomorrow morning and install it, and all will be complete. I won't need any help with that.

it is odd. the support i take as personal. the idea of a diffent way to manage the job i do not take as personal. any member is free to make a proposal to the board. after seeing all those guys work so hard all day on the new storage i thought the higgs-boson emitter backpack might work really well for that! where is doug when you need him? my admiration to glen and crew.

Doug what is it that you do? Do you use a 4GL Database that utilizes unix cron scheduling? Or do you work with MySQL? Doug did not claim that he was an expert of building the storage, he only stated that he could have managed it with a less labor intensive way.
Thanks to Glenn and the people who showed up to get this new storage built so that we could start bringing more revenue in. At the same time, those who, for whatever reason, did not participate in building it should not be put in the position of feeling guilty.

I've been out with the stomach flu the past week. I had a rough holiday spending it my Father in Des Moines who was diagnosed with central nervous system lymphoma in November. My brother and I managed to get him back into his home on Christmas day and 2 days later. The chemo nearly destroyed his kidneys, hearing and ability to walk.
Progress is a 4th generation language and the company does very little advertising the new marketing calls it Openedge ABL application business language. I first used it in 1986.

I entertained and discussed the idea of managing the storage first back when the Halliburton no bid contracts were a popular conversation topic. I had also built my consulting practice by bidding half of what the other consultants were charging. I could also sweeten the deal to SHGA by allowing use of my SUN Alpha PA system 15" woofers and horn, sure sm58 mic and stand which could save the club an additional $800 a year. I have just refurbished the woofers.
Another benefit might be more donations to the club knowing the money will be more efficiently used.

(that's why I am concerned about the rust)
Another reason is the cat pee'd on my glider 2 times and when I went to wash it the tree poked a hole in my sail. I had proposed using a sonic deterrent like the US army used against Noriega in 1989 but that was rejected as cruel but it took about 2 weeks to capture the cat. A simple air horn would have dislodged the cat weeks before it had become emaciated.
at least 1 other glider was pee'd on as well.
